Vehicle Design and Roadway Safety

The Road to Zero Coalition is an initiative of the National Safety Council dedicated to eliminating road deaths in the United States by 2050. Thanks to a generous grant from Uber, we are able to highlight our ongoing work on how vehicle design influences roadway safety.

Safer vehicles make safer journeys. If they put vulnerable road users first and compensate for human error, they can move us closer to our goal of ending serious preventable crashes. They are also a crucial component of the Safe System Approach, a framework for thinking about roadway safety that has been adopted not only by advocates all over the world, but by the United States Department of Transportation.

The Safe System Approach acknowledges who we are: Human beings who make mistakes, no matter how often we drive, ride or walk to get where we need to go. It also emphasizes our shared responsibility for safety, and that our actions should be proactive; we shouldn’t wait for serious crashes to happen before we work towards preventing them. Learn more about what Road to Zero is doing, and join us in the pursuit of safe mobility for all.
