Determine the recommended amount of naloxone for your workplace to be prepared to respond to an opioid overdose emergency

Workplace overdose deaths have risen more than 600% since 2011, and the main driver of these deaths is opioids. Workplace emergency preparedness and first aid programs should be equipped with naloxone to prepare for this risk. Naloxone should be included in every workplace just as organizations prioritize other emergency preparedness measures that can save lives, such as AEDs and fire extinguishers.

The National Safety Council has conducted research to identify some considerations to help organizations determine a recommended amount of naloxone for organizations. Provide your best estimates in the fields below to see your unique results.

What is naloxone?

Naloxone is an opioid overdose reversal medication. Opioids are the leading cause of overdose deaths.

Naloxone temporarily blocks the effect an opioid overdose has on the brain, returning a person to normal breathing. It is a time-sensitive, life-saving tool, that is safe to use, even if opioids are not present. Some formulations are available over the counter in the United States for a convenient opportunity to integrate this life-saving tool into organizational first aid or emergency preparedness programs. The National Safety Council received financial support from Emergent BioSolutions Inc., the manufacturer of NARCAN® Nasal Spray, to conduct independent research related to opioid overdose emergency preparedness. The sponsor had no role in research design, data collection, analysis or interpretation.
