Founded on September 14, 1917, following the Titanic tragedy, the NSC Waterborne Transport Group (WTG), formerly the Marine Section, is dedicated to advancing safety on waterways worldwide. Aligned with the National Safety Council’s mission to save lives, the WTG focuses on preventing maritime-related incidents and occupational injuries in the marine industry.
Our Focus:
● Sharing best practices to reduce marine incidents and workplace injuries
● Identifying and addressing hazards in maritime operations
● Supporting compliance with marine safety regulations
● Promoting new safety technologies and engineering controls
● Fostering collaboration across the maritime sector
WTG members—safety professionals from across the industry—meet twice a year. Meetings feature expert speakers from agencies like the USCG, NFPA, NOAA and MARAD, followed by peer roundtables to exchange lessons learned and best practices. Participants represent a wide range of vessels, including tankers, tugs, cruise ships, offshore support and research vessels — U.S.-flagged and international, ocean-going and inland.
Each spring, the Waterborne Transportation Group offers companies the opportunity to confidentially benchmark with others in this industry on safety and environmental incidents. See where your organization is compared to others on Injury Facts with NSC benchmarking. Only companies that provide data through this form will receive the full report in April.
View the 2024 WTG Benchmarking template. All responses are separated from identifying email address upon receipt and confidentiality is protected. 2025 statistics will be collected in February 2026. Email with any questions.

The Waterborne Transport Group is a program of the National Safety Council dedicated to advance our mission of safety to all workplaces. Join us by sponsoring a meal, reception or an entire in person meeting. If you have additional questions, please email divisions@nsc.org for more information.
The mission of the National Safety Council is simple: to save lives, from the workplace to anyplace. Divisions are groups of NSC member employees organized to provide those with similar safety interests the ability to connect with others.
The Divisions offer educational programs, resources and connection opportunities. With eight Divisions separated by industry or interest, there is a place for all member employees regardless of industry, organizational or safety program size, safety program maturity, or individual background or experience to add their voice to advance safety for all workers.
Divisions work to advance safety best practices, build networks and bring expertise to the National Safety Council. Learn more about the Divisions at nsc.org/divisions.
