NSC Safety Leadership Program

The National Safety Council Safety Leadership Program is an in-depth curriculum designed to give executives, business leaders and operational management the safety skills they need to be successful. It shows these key players how to lead others to achieve and sustain an injury-free workplace. 

Using the Safety Leadership Model – Planning, People and Performance – this course guides leaders to foster a successful safety and health organization.

Interactive Eight-module Course

Motivate your employees and achieve desired performance results with the Safety Leadership Program.
Upon purchase of the Safety Leadership Program, the virtual instructor led sessions will become available for registration through NSC Learning. Modules 1 through 3 are required. Participants choose three additional modules based on their interests. In all, six modules must be completed to receive a completion certificate.

Module 1: Building Safety as a Value - Required
Emphasizes the importance of managing an organization safely. Content goes beyond compliance to cover safety practices in your organization and how to prepare for – and avoid – an OSHA visit.

Module 2: Influencing a Safety Culture - Required 
Helps safety leaders understand their role in facilitating safety and health. The course explores how to ensure employees are engaged and how to be a more proactive leader. It forms the basis of building a culture with improved productivity, profitability, quality and safety.

Module 3: Becoming a Safety and Health Leader - Required 
Explores the characteristics of great safety and health leaders. This course takes the safety leader on a journey to understand what kind of leader they are and what they should aspire to be from a safety perspective.

Module 4: Applying Safety and Health Performance Measures
Covers common performance measures to evaluate the effectiveness of a safety and health system, and how to identify key performance indicators, monitor KPIs and the importance of leading versus lagging indicators.

Module 5: Communicating for Results 
Learn to communicate effectively with employees, customers and other key internal and external stakeholders to achieve safety and health goals. Covers approaches and strategies for engaging employees in safe behaviors. 

Module 6: Providing Recognition and Rewards 
Recognition and rewards can improve employee engagement and morale. This module highlights the types of rewards and recognition that can be used to boost safety and health, along with the best ways to leverage them. 

Module 7: Implementing Succession Planning for Business Leaders 
Prepares safety leaders to identify future leaders internally and externally. This module covers strategies and methods for identifying future leaders and how to equip them with the skills to manage safety and health. 

Module 8: Understanding Human & Organizational Performance (HOP)
Examines the key parts of the HOP philosophy and ways to apply them toward safety and health in an organization. Participants will understand how organizations can minimize the effects of human errors by promoting defenses that mitigate risk.
