Safe Work Isn’t a Privilege – It's a Right

This Labor Day, we're advancing solutions that protect every worker.

Labor Day celebrates workers who drive our economy, strengthen communities and support families. But this holiday has deeper roots. It emerged from the labor movement’s fight for safer, fairer working conditions — a legacy that continues today.

The National Safety Council believes honoring workers means building a future where safety, health and wellbeing are fundamental rights in every workplace. As work evolves, so too must our strategies for keeping people safe.

On Labor Day and year-round, we remain committed to enhancing workplace safety by driving innovation.

Research Drives Injury Prevention

In the U.S., a worker is injured every seven seconds. Musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of these injuries and cost businesses billions of dollars annually. The MSD Solutions Lab is working to change that.

The lab collaborates with leading researchers, safety professionals and employers to identify data-driven solutions and develop novel research to help prevent these injuries before they occur. Through its annual grant program and Safety Innovation Challenge, the lab has helped discover many promising advancements, including computer vision technology, exoskeletons and robotics.

Technology Helps Eliminate Preventable Workplace Deaths

Despite decades of progress, preventable workplace fatalities remain all too common. Most stem from well-known hazards. The Work to Zero initiative helps organizations adopt technology that can save lives.

AI-powered monitoring systems, wearables and drones play critical roles in preventing serious injuries and deaths on the job. Work to Zero helps employers understand what tools are available and how to implement them effectively. This brings us closer to a future where every worker goes home healthy.

Mental Health Support Creates Stronger, Safer Workplaces

Workplace safety extends beyond physical hazards. Today’s employees face growing mental health challenges that affect their wellbeing, performance and safety. More than 85% of employees say work affects their mental health. The need for change is urgent.

NSC helps employers build cultures of psychological safety. It provides guidance on reducing stigma, expanding support and preparing leaders to respond with care. When mental health is prioritized, workplaces become stronger, safer and more resilient.

Wellbeing belongs in every workplace safety conversation. The future of safe work includes support for the whole person — body and mind.

Workers Deserve Protection

As we commemorate Labor Day, remember that safe work is not a privilege — it’s a right. We owe it to the workers of yesterday, today and tomorrow to carry forward the labor movement’s legacy. We must continue to push boundaries and reimagine what workplace safety can be.

Let’s honor workers the way they deserve — by protecting them.
