WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the National Safety Council issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Senate confirmation of Jonathan Morrison as administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation.
“The National Safety Council congratulates Jonathan Morrison on his successful confirmation as the next head of NHTSA,” said Lorraine Martin, NSC CEO and chair of the Road to Zero Coalition. “Roadway deaths remain unacceptably high, with an average of 122 people losing their lives each day. NSC looks forward to continuing to partner with USDOT to end these preventable fatalities and achieve our shared goal of zero roadway deaths by 2050.”
In 2023, 44,762 people died in motor-vehicle crashes, or an average of over 122 people on a typical day.
Motor-vehicle fatalities and serious incidents cost the United States hundreds of billions of dollars each year in wage and productivity losses, medical expenses, administrative expenses, motor-vehicle property damage, and employer costs. Furthermore, these tragic events forever change the lives of families and coworkers across the nation.
The Road to Zero Coalition, established in 2016 by NSC, is the nation’s largest traffic safety alliance. The Coalition operates in collaboration with USDOT and over 2,000 transportation safety stakeholders with a goal to eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries by 2050.
