WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Safety Council is encouraged by the significant decline in traffic deaths reflected in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 2025 preliminary data released today. The 2025 decreases projected by both NHTSA and NSC underscore the impact of sustained roadway safety efforts, including a commitment to the Safe System Approach, and highlight the further action needed to achieve zero roadway fatalities.
“This progress proves that change and improvement of our transportation system are not only possible, but already underway,” said Lorraine Martin, NSC CEO. “By working together to make our roads safer, we can eliminate preventable traffic deaths in our lifetime.”
NSC and NHTSA have long partnered to make our roads safer through the Road to Zero Coalition, the nation’s largest traffic safety alliance. Established in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Transportation, the coalition unites transportation safety stakeholders in the shared mission to eliminate preventable roadway fatalities by 2050. The Coalition’s three pillars are promoting the Safe System Approach, doubling down on what works and accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies.
The Council has calculated traffic fatality estimates since 1913. More information on NSC estimates can be found here.
