NSC Opens Applications for Community Traffic Safety Grants

Grants support initiatives making lasting progress for roadway safety.

November 05, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Safety Council is accepting applications for the 2026 Road to Zero Community Traffic Safety Grants, funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to eliminate preventable roadway deaths.

The Road to Zero Grant Program will disburse $750,000 in 2026 to projects, programs and research that advance the Road to Zero Coalition‘s mission of achieving zero traffic fatalities by 2050. Grant recipients will receive between $50,000 and $200,000 for one year to complete a project that addresses one or more components of the Safe System Approach to roadway safety: Safer people, safer vehicles, safer speeds, safer roads and post-crash care.

The grants are awarded through the nation’s largest traffic safety coalition, the Road to Zero Coalition, an NSC-managed program created in a collaborative effort with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Coalition focuses on eliminating preventable roadway deaths through evidence-based strategies, advancing the adoption of new technologies and promoting a culture of safety that aligns with the Safe System Approach.

“The Road to Zero Community Traffic Safety Grants help fund the development of innovative and effective safety programs, which will generate lessons learned that can be applied throughout the country,” said NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison. “NHTSA is pleased to partner with the Road to Zero Coalition to support innovative programs to make our roads safer for everyone.”

“These grants invest in innovative solutions that are advancing roadway safety and saving lives,” said Julia Kite-Laidlaw, senior program manager of Road to Zero at NSC. “We're excited to support the creative approaches recipients are taking to achieve our shared vision of zero traffic deaths.”

Applications must be submitted by Friday, Jan. 16, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST. Learn more about grant requirements and eligibility at nsc.org/rtzgrants or register for informational webinars on Nov. 18 or Nov. 21. For additional information, contact roadtozero@nsc.org
