What You Can Do for This Year’s National Teen Driver Safety Week

Show your support for this observance Oct. 20-26, 2024.

October 23, 2024

Teen drivers face some of the biggest risks on our roads and every year during National Teen Driver Safety Week we call for a combined effort between parents, caregivers, instructors and other road users to take action to help keep them safe. Teen driver safety affects us all: the latest estimates show crashes involving young drivers kill more than 5,000 people a year.

While these statistics are shocking, change is possible. Twenty years ago, nearly twice as many people – including teens – were killed in these crashes. We know what works, from enforcing strong GDL practices to limiting night driving, and now we need to take action.

Safer teen drivers mean safer roads for us all, so as this year’s observance approaches (Oct. 20-26) we want everyone to join us to prioritize safe teen driving. No matter where you live or whether you have teens in your life, you can participate and help make a difference. Here’s how you can get involved in National teen Driver Safety Week.

Get Free Resources

To help you get started, we’re partnered with Honda to create a free toolkit for this year’s observance.  The kit includes participation guides, posters, videos, a social media kit and more, with all resources available in English and Spanish. You can review these resources with your teen, share them with other parents and caregivers, or post them on social media to help spread the message. Sign up at nsc.org/NTDSW.

Plan an Event

Whether you’re a parent, teacher or administrator, you can help plan an event in your community. Use the participant guides in the toolkit to reach out to others and organize your event, then pass out the posters, parental resources and more at the session.

Promote National Teen Driver Safety Week

Show your support for this observance and teen safe driving on social media. The toolkit includes ready-to-use social media posts or you can craft your own messages – be sure to tag your posts with #DriveitHOME to reach others participating in this observance.

Practice with the Teens in Your Life

The best way to get teens the experience they need behind the wheel is to help them practice. So if you’re a parent of a new driver or you have teens in your life – whether they’re loved ones, students or relatives of close friends – share the resources in this toolkit to help our newest drivers learn to stay safe. And if you don’t have an opportunity to help new drivers learn, you can still help by being a responsible, predictable road user so the teen drivers around you can follow your example.
